Making Cheaper, Healthier Food Choices
While you are looking to eat healthier you often
combine healthy foods with high prices: wrong. Living on a budget, as well as healthy is important and making your dollar stretch as far as it can is equally as important. There are many new, innovative, and creative ways to eat healthy while sticking in your budget. Knowledge is power, and combining knowledge with time and planning it is possible to make cheaper, healthier food choices for you and your family all in the same trip.
First you should take the time to evaluate what you spend on food. What items do you purchase which are unnecessary, how often do you eat out, and where can you cut back that spending? Limiting that unnecessary food spending is one of the first and most effective ways to save money.
1. Stop buying junk food. Soda, crackers, cookies, and pre-packaged meals are all unnecessary. Both your body and your bank account will thank you for this small yet effective elimination of unnecessary spending and unhealthy food consumption.
2. Stick to your list. Prepare a list of health foods before you leave home. Stick to that list at all costs when you are out. Do not keep adding in foods and snacks as you go along. Keeping to your list will keep you on a budget and your body healthy.
3. Watch out for hidden sugar. Pre-packaged and processed foods often contain high levels of those sugars which are horrible for your body. While they are simple to prepare and your family seems to love them, they are horrible for your body. They often lead to or contribute to major health issues. Corn syrup, molasses and brown rice syrup are all examples of what to look out for. Foods such as instant mashed potatoes, white bread, and even canned vegetables contain high levels of these hidden sugars.
4. Try a farmers market. The foods from farmers markets are all unprocessed and often local. The fresh produce and foods brought straight from the farm are often sold to you at sometimes as much as half of the price you would pay at a supermarket. You not only save money but support your local economy.
While it seems simple enough to remember, people often forget all of the bits and bobs that go along with making foods. Eating healthier not only saves you money, but benefits your body in numerous ways. Be sure to start eating cheaper with healthier foods today!
