Economical Driving: Saving Fuel

It doesn’t matter what type of car you drive, with this economy there are always ways to start saving money, and get more out of your gallons of gas. A couple of gallons at a time does not seem like much, but if you add the price of a gallon of gas and add how much more you got out of a gallon of gas, it starts to add up. These seven fuel saving tips have served well in improving more miles to the gallon, and could even help you get more miles to the gallon so you can start saving money.

1. Slow down

All you have to do to save on gas is slow down. When increasing your speeds, the amount of gas used is a lot more than what it would be driving at a slower pace. If you drive ten over the speed limit, try slowing down to the speed limit for a week and see how much more gas you have saved, and the money you have gained. If you drive at the speed limit, try driving ten under the speed limit for a week, and see how you have started saving money. You may think that by slowing down your speed, it will take much longer to get to your destination, when in fact it does not take much longer at all.

2. Check your tire pressure

Having tires that are not inflated to the right pressure will cause more use in the gas. Tire pressure is something that most people do not think will cause bad gas mileage. Make sure to check your tires every month (tires tend to lose 1 pound of pressure a month) and when it is cold make sure to check your tires frequently when the temperature drops (tires lose 1 pound of pressure for every 10 degrees dropped). Make sure you have a reliable tire gauge, and that you check your tires before you drive the vehicle (if checked after driving the vehicle, the tires will be warm and so will the air, causing you to get an inaccurate reading of the pressures in the tires).

3. Check your air filter

Air filters in a car can determine what kind of gas mileage you will get. If you air filter in your car is dirty, it needs to be replaced (you can tell if it is dirty by holding it up to the light, and if you cannot see through it, it needs to be changed). The air filters are easy to change, but you save money by getting a brand that is cleanable. This way you don’t have to buy a new one every time you think your air filter needs to be changed, and this is saving money. By having a cleanable air filter you also protect the planet by not polluting the earth, and you get better automobile performance with a cleanable air filter.

4. Get back to nature

A simple rack up savings on fuel usage is by shutting off your air conditioner, and opening up the windows of the car. It may be warmer, but you’re saving fuel. The only time it could be to use your air conditioner is at higher speeds, but consider the costs of higher speeds and air conditioner.

5. Back off the bling

It is a nice thing to have nice rims and new tires, but at what cost? If you have new tires that have a wider trim, it takes more gas to move them. Always keep your old tires or stock tires, that way when you go on long road trips you can put your old tires back on your car and better use of your petrol.

6. Downsize

Downsizing can be a good way to save on fuel. If you’re a smaller family, get a car that will fit a smaller family. When looking at smaller cars, do not worry about crash protection. The smaller cars are being designed to survive crashes with bigger vehicles. The smaller cars are also being designed with side airbags and are electronically stable.

7. Don’t drive

Telling someone not to drive seems like an odd advice to give out now a day, but the truth is if you don’t have to drive, then don’t. Consider options such as the train, or riding your bike. Any time you get in your car ask if you really need to take this little trip, or if you could hold up until more errands come up.

If you take my advice and follow these seven fuel tips, you may see a significant improvement in your fuel usage and mileage. This will definitely make you a happier person knowing that you have more money in your pocket and less miles on the car. Start saving money today by changing up your fuel usage.
